In my latest adventure through Italy, I discovered a hidden gem in the heart of Umbria: Orvieto. If you’re looking for a perfect day trip from Rome or Tuscany, Orvieto should definitely be on your list. Let me tell you why.
How to Get to Orvieto: The Charming Funicular
After a scenic hour-and-a-half drive from Rome, my adventure began with a ride on Orvieto’s historic funicular, a system dating back to 1888. Originally powered by water, it has been modernized but still retains its nostalgic charm. From the funicular, the panoramic views already immerse you in the magic of this medieval city.

Getting Lost in Orvieto’s Medieval Streets
Walking through Orvieto’s cobbled streets feels like stepping back in time. Every corner, every ancient arch, every square seems to whisper stories from centuries past. I recommend allowing yourself to get a little lost, wandering aimlessly to discover hidden, charming corners.
Where to Eat in Orvieto?
If you’re looking to taste authentic local cuisine, Bottega Vera is a must-visit. I enjoyed a delicious panino paired with a glass of Orvieto Classico, a white wine with centuries of history, produced since the Etruscan era. An unforgettable gastronomic experience!
The Stunning Duomo of Orvieto
At the heart of the city stands the Duomo of Orvieto, a breathtaking Gothic cathedral. Its golden facade and intricate sculptures tell biblical stories, and inside (if you’re lucky enough to enter), you’ll find frescoes by Luca Signorelli that even inspired Michelangelo himself. This Duomo took almost three centuries to build and is a true masterpiece.
Underground Orvieto: The Etruscan Caves
Beneath the streets of Orvieto lies a hidden world: over 1,200 Etruscan caves. During my visit, I joined a guided tour that led me through these ancient tunnels, once used for water storage, as shelters, and even for pigeon breeding. A unique experience! And at just 8 Euros, tickets can be purchased at the tourist office in front of the Duomo.
Panoramic Views and Relaxation in Orvieto
Before saying goodbye, I enjoyed stunning views of the Umbrian valley from one of the viewpoints. Being on a plateau, the vistas are simply breathtaking. Orvieto is part of the Cittaslow movement, promoting a relaxed, sustainable lifestyle. And trust me, you can feel it.
Got More Time? Don’t Miss:
Orvieto is much more than just the Duomo and the Etruscan caves. This town offers many other attractions that you can visit separately or with the Orvieto Pass, which is also available at the same office in front of the Duomo. So if you have time to explore, consider these other attractions:
Pozzo di San Patrizio: A masterpiece of engineering with its double spiral staircase.
Archaeological Museum: Ancient history at your fingertips.
Albornoz Fortress: Panoramic views perfect for your photos.
Pozzo della Cava: More secret tunnels to explore.
Conclusion: Is Orvieto Worth Visiting?
Absolutely. Orvieto is a perfect blend of history, culture, gastronomy, and unforgettable landscapes. If you’re in Rome and want to escape the crowds and see something different, this town is the perfect place. And trust me, you won’t regret it. It’s even more accessible than other hill towns, making it a perfect destination for everyone.
